September 2017-Present
Herstory Writers Workshop is a non-profit organization based in Long Island that brings unheard voices into the public arena, transforming lived experiences into written memoirs powerful enough to change hearts, minds and policy. For over two decades, in English and Spanish, in the jails, in schools and in the community, Herstory writers has been running various writing workshops to empower community members in Long Island and the Greater New York City Area.
The Art of Storytelling
As an aspiring professional in the communications industry, I understand the power of storytelling in reaching diverse audiences which is why I got involved with Herstory Writers Workshop. Through this experience, I was able to publish various chapters of my personal memoir on growing up as an immigrant, speak at advocacy events and become a certified writing workshop facilitator.
I attended a semester-long training seminar run by Herstory Writers Workshop, in which I learned of different writing techniques that captivate audience's attention and create structure for memoir writing. After completing training, I taught my own class at a high school in Long Island, where I worked with recently-arrived Hispanic immigrants and assisted them with writing and publishing pieces on accounts of injustices they have faced. The workshop was completely taught in Spanish.
