Stories For Liberation: “Montreal”
The concertmaster went up and tuned his orchestra. The acoustics of the auditorium were so strong that the vibrations of his instrument made my body shiver with excitement. Once the conductor came out, he got the group to start playing a symphony by Shostakovich almost immediately. The violin section was going through the runs of the first movement without hesitation. Their perfect synchronization made me think that there was absolutely nothing else on their minds other than giving a strong performance. Once the powerful brass section came in, the tone of the piece changed: their evil sound contrasted with the lightness of the strings. This resonated with the sentiments I was having at that moment. Students’ Recitals a Labor of Love
...“‘The Mendelssohn Concerto’ is one of the first pieces that inspired me to play the violin,” said Kapusta when asked about her choice to include “Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor” in the recital. The popular concerto has been performed by many renowned violinists, including Hilary Hahn and Anne Sophie-Mutter. The first movement is introduced with a powerful violin solo that states the song’s main melody, followed by the orchestra joining with the piece’s theme. It builds up into a cadenza done by the soloist who has freedom to improvise. The unique transitions between each movement and the intricate passages that Mendelssohn wrote in for the violinist make learning this piece an impressive feat for any advanced performer...
